NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2009
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
As I write this it is definitely Fall. After a couple of
beautiful mild days, stormy weather and snow in the
mountains is returning. The beautiful fall colors are
fading or the leaves have fallen. In my
neighborhood many leaves fell during the last storm
and neighbors got reacquainted as they set about
collecting nature--that is raking--. Fortunately, there
are few leaf blowers. Clearly it is time to think
about winter sports.--OK hikers, good for you for
persevering.
Most have already planned their trips, but if you are
still pondering there are still opportunities to sign up
for some trips. Inquire of the trip leaders. Some
trips are full, but even then there is a good chance to
get on the waiting list. If your schedule is flexible
last minute vacancies do happen and you have a
good chance to be selected.
Our November Social will feature Avalanche and
Snow Safety. Roland Emetaz our speaker has been
active in the area for many years. He recently
returned from a Snow Science Workshop in Davos
and with working with the Czeck Mountain
Services. His program should be informative as well
as entertaining.
Since we are transitioning to winter sports it is a
good time to thank Lynda Shapiro for a great
job coordinating the summer program. Also to
thank the leaders of events: Charlotte Smith and
Judy Williams for hiking; Pete & Elaine Nelson for
rambles; Martin & Susan Butt for trail timers;
Lorena Horton for canoe and kayaking; Warren &
Barbara Jones for Prineville camping; Char Branton
Fenella Robinson for Cape Lookout camping;
Weldon & Manu for the picnic; and then there is
Ellie Betts for trips any season. Because of all their
efforts and those of others who led specific day
trips, summer provided a full slate of activities.
While we may be a ski club there appears to be as
many or more activity days in the summer. A tribute
to all you active seniors. Dale

Bike & Barge Bremen, Germany to
Amsterdam Aug 29 Sept 11, 2009
Ellie Betts, Reporter
This year we had a new itinerary created just for us!
Since the starting point was Bremen, we all found
our way there at different times and by different
means.

Manu' & I came in to Amsterdam early to spend 2
days. We had great weather, a super hotel and fun
checking out this 1200 year-old Hanseatic City. We
did a number to things, but our highlight was a visit
to the new Hermitage Amsterdam museum. This is
the only branch of this great St. Petersburg museum
and is the inaugural exhibition with more than 1800
objects. It was entitled, "At the Russian Court
palace and protocol in the 19
th
Century." It featured
spectacular ball gowns, beautiful portraits, unique
furniture and impressive jeweler and precious
stones. It will be shown for over seven months, and
then a new exhibit will replace it. It is certainly a
"must see" for anyone coming to Amsterdam...we
spent 4.5 hours here! The Altstadt (old city),
featuring the statue of the Bremen Town Musicians,
is close to the Schnoor. This district with its narrow
streets was once the home to simple fishermen, then
the red-light district and now has transformed to
house artisans, shops, restaurants and art galleries.
On the last night there, a big group of us found the
Katzen-Café in a very narrow alley and had a
wonderful dinner.

The 14 from our group joined 12 others from across
the US for our 2-week bike adventure. We
zigzagged across north Germany for a variety of
experiences. There were several highlights. We
biked just over the Dutch border to the Vesting
Bourtange built in 1742. The town is surrounded by
star-shaped moats and high berms as protection
from invaders. Along the way we biked to Bad
Zwischenahn and toured a Bauernhaus Museum, a
large thatch-roofed farmhouse & surroundings
typical of that area in the past.

A highlight near Papenburg on the Ems River was
our tour of Jos. L. Meyer Papenburg or Meyer
Werft founded in 1795. This is a huge 3-building
shipyard that builds large cruise ships, passenger
ships for Indonesia, container ships, gas tankers,
animal transport ships and ferries to be used on the
North Sea and English Channel. They were just
starting to build a new class of ships for
Disney...ones with a "Disneyland" on board. This
tour was fascinating.

From Emden we took a catamaran ferry to Borkum
Island, an East Frisian Island in the North Sea for
the day. This is the western-most island of the
German East Friesian Islands. It is a big tourist
Mecca during the warm weather.

We experienced two days of heavy winds. As we
left Germany and rode into Holland, this changed to
a day of rain. Our leader, Janneke, told us this was
the tail end of Hurricane Danny that had come up
the Atlantic Coast and curved over us. After that
we had good weather again.

As we moved from area to area, we learned the
daily greetings changed. In Bremen it was
"Morgen." On Borkum and in the countryside west
of Bremen it was "Moin, moin." In the countryside
around Groningen it was "Moi, moi. In Friesland it
was "Hoi."

We spent time in Appingedam with its "hanging
kitchens" over the canals. Then it was on to
Groningen, the largest city in the province. Here
we had an extra day where we learned more about
trading and the Hanseatic League and spent time at
the market in the main square.

As we cycled into Friesland, we stopped one night
in Bergum, an upscale vacation area. They have a
most unusual sport there that was derived as a way
to cross all the drainage ditches and small canals in
this area. It is called "fieljeppen" and uses a long
pole over water. You run, grab the pole, shinny up
as fast and far as you can and try to get across the

4
water as far as possible. It was fun to watch the
practice.

We continued on through Friesland and south
around the Ijsselmeer to ride back into Amsterdam.
It is always a final highlight to ride into this great
city with the locals on the bike paths to the barge. It
is like a graduation ceremony! Our final dinner was
a fabulous Dutch Indonesian banquet. Janneke and
Winfried wrote and presented a song to us called
"Orange Angeline." This goes to the tune of
"Yellow Submarine."

IZAAK WALTON XC, SS
Jan 18-22
Trip Leader: Lynda Shapiro
Izaak Walton XC Skiing and Snowshoeing Trip:
The end of Daylight Savings Time always brings
the message home. On the first dark afternoon, it
hits that winter is really here. Soon, it will be
snowing and it is now clearly time to make plans for
winter trips. The Izaak Walton trip still has lots of
room. Dates are January 18-22 with travel by
Amtrak on the 17th and 23rd. It is a relatively
inexpensive trip, getting there is almost effortless,
and the XC skiing and snowshoeing are great. In
addition to the groomed trails, there is (at a slight
additional charge) the endless back country expanse
of Glacier National Forest. You can check the flyer

Tom and Susan Carter are organizing a no-host ski

coordinate and make some reservations. It's really
fun and the weather is usually nice. Here's our
schedule, you can join us for as many days as you
want.

Day 1: Wednesday, Feb 24, 2010. Drive or carpool
to Ashland, check in at Super 8 motel. Attend play
if you choose.
Day 2 and 3: Thursday and Friday, Feb. 25 and 26.
Ski at Mt Ashland during the day, attend plays in
evening.

Downhill at Mt Ashland or XC in area, attend plays
in evening.
Day 6: Monday, March 1st. XC at Crater Lake and
stay at local ranch.
Day 7: Tuesday, March 2nd. Drive home.

The Super 8 motel is about $70/night for a queen

have a continental breakfast and a small pool. They
are about the cheapest in Ashland. There are lots
of nice restaurants in Ashland, we can go to
different places each night or be on our own.
Susan and I are members of the Shakespeare
festival so we can get a major discount on tickets.
Trip participants can choose which plays they
want to see and we can buy the tickets. 2010
schedule is out now. Here's the website:
http://www.osfashland.org/index.aspx
Mt Ashland is a nice, small ski area open Thursday
through Sunday only.
I'll ski downhill there for a couple of days then lead
a couple of XC
trips in the area, weather permitting.
XC skiing at Crater Lake is beautiful if the weather
is nice and we'll stay at a local ranch the
last night

The plays don't start till mid-February and skiing is
usually over by mid-march so there is a narrow
window when both are available.

HOLLAND BIKE & BARGE
Rivers & Deltas, Sept 11-24,
Trip Leader Ellie Betts
I have 3 rooms left on this trip! The deposit
deadline was October 31, 2009. I will only be able
to hold this space until January 1, 2010. Then I
have to release any remaining rooms to the Bike &
Barge Co. owners to fill. Give me a call if you want
to join us!

This will be our 6
th
club trip...each covering a
different area in Holland and/or Belgium and
Germany. Since we have done most of the routes,
our company has developed another new one for us
this year. From Amsterdam we head south to the
delta areas of the Rhine & Maas Rivers and ride
east to the Germany border. We visit Nijmegen, the
oldest city in Holland. After a ride through several
German towns, we return on a different route to see
old towns, farms, bucolic scenery, historical places
and other unique sights along the entire trip. We
circle back to Amsterdam and spend our last full
day there.

In the evenings we have tours of the town where we
will be spending the night. Traveling with a barge
as your hotel, restaurant & baggage carrier is a great
way to cycle in Europe. There are 2 daily groups
with Dutch guides from which to choose...a longer,
faster one and a shorter, slower one. Both see the
same major attractions. I just learned that
Janneke will be our lead guide for this trip!
If
you need a day off, you can travel on the barge as it
moves to the next location for a different experience

You experience Holland at the ground level with the
people. It is great riding, wonderful meals,
sightseeing and just fun camaraderie.
There is a trip sheet posted on our website for you
to print out. If you call me, I will mail you one as
well. Please call or email me for information or with
questions at ,
.
