Loose rugs and mats are dangerous for all people. The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that each year sixty-eight hundred people 65 and older are treated in hospital emergency rooms for injuries associated with rugs and runners. Falls are the most common cause of fatal injury for older people.

To help prevent injuries:
  • remove rugs and runners that tend to slide or apply double-faced adhesive carpet tape or rubber matting to the backs of rugs and runners.
  • purchase rugs with slip-resistance backing.
  • check rugs and mats periodically to see if the backing needs to be replaced.
